Distinguished and Famous people from South Queensland

🦉 David Fleay

David Fleay selected land beside the Tallebudgera estuary for a wildlife reserve and acquired properties at West Burleigh in 1952. Forested slopes, koala food trees and abundant wildlife helped persuade him that the location was right. Research and education were central to his purpose; he strongly disliked having the sanctuary described simply as a zoo. Platypuses became familiar participants in public demonstrations and questions. His writing and newspaper columns brought conservation arguments to a wider audience and helped encourage the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland. Field knowledge and public education remained central to the sanctuary.

📚 David Malouf

David Malouf was born in South Brisbane in 1934 and graduated from the University of Queensland with first-class honours in English in 1955. Teaching and years abroad preceded his life as a full-time writer. Brisbane remained a powerful imaginative setting, especially in Johnno, which recreates the city of the 1940s and 1950s. Poetry, fiction and memoir draw attention to its hills, gullies and subtropical atmosphere. His association is therefore both biographical and literary: the city educated him and supplied places and experiences that he continued to transform into writing long after leaving it.

🌳 Judith Wright

Judith Wright and her partner Jack McKinney bought a cottage at Tamborine Mountain in 1947, settling there to write. Her first poetry collection, The Moving Image, had appeared the previous year, and the mountain became the setting for an important period of family and literary life. Wright also became a pioneering conservation campaigner and advocate for Aboriginal land rights. Those commitments made her public contribution wider than poetry alone. The southern Queensland connection is a substantial period of residence and work, while her birthplace and family origins belonged to New South Wales. Landscape, responsibility and the consequences of settlement remained important concerns in her writing and activism.

🎭 Geoffrey Rush

Geoffrey Rush was born at Toowoomba in 1951 and completed his schooling in Brisbane before graduating from the University of Queensland in 1972. A theatre career preceded the international breakthrough of Shine, for which he won the Academy Award for best actor. Later roles included films in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and The King’s Speech, while stage and television work brought major awards of their own. The Queensland connection spans childhood and education, placing years of preparation behind a screen success that could otherwise seem sudden. Theatre remained an important part of the career even after Hollywood recognition.
